PUBLICATIONS/ Launch of ES3 - our first fully gold open access journal
January 2021 saw the launch of Earth Science, Systems and Society (ES3), our first fully gold open access not-for-profit journal.
With a particular focus on cross-disciplinary research related to sustainability in society, it's first published articles included subjects such as sustainable offshore wind power, subsurface CO2 storage and flooding in the Kashmir Valley.

GEOSCIENTIST/ Quarterly magazine and new website
March 2021 saw the launch of our brand new website Geoscientist Online along with the first of our quarterly Geoscientist magazines.
The response to both the website and new look magazine has been extremely positive and we look forward to providing the same high quality content into 2022.

OUTREACH/ Record-breaking Public Lecture series
In 2021 we continued to run our long-standing Public Lecture series online ¡V and over 10,000 people joined us to learn something new!

POLICY/ Climate change, COP26 and geoscience
In November we attended COP26, the annual global United Nations climate summit, held this year in Glasgow. We sent a delegation of staff and Fellows to raise awareness of the many ways in which geoscience is critical to delivering solutions that mitigate the impacts of climate change.

We have been working hard behind the scenes to build on the incredible success of our Themed Year program by launching four brand new strategic science themes:
- Energy Transition
- Climate & Ecology
- Geohazards, Georesilience & Geoengineering
- Planetary Science

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2022/ The Year of Sustainability
2022 will mark the end of our long-standing Themed Year program. Take a look at the wealth of resources and events we have created throughout this series and share your favourite memories and stories of the Themed Year program with us at [email protected].
In the Year of Sustainability we will explore the role geologists play in delivering the energy transition and meeting the UN¡¦s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a variety of research conferences, lectures and education and outreach activities.
